PLACEMAKING | URBAN ART | MURAL | LOCAL HISTORY RESEARCH
We were commissioned by the London Borough of Hillingdon, initially working alongside BDP to create a mural under the bridge near West Drayton Station as part of improvements around the new Crossrail Station (now called the 'Elizabeth Line').
The footpaths had several problems. Slime oozed from the walls, dribbling down from the bridge above. It was dark, uninviting and a crime hotspot.
Many stakeholders were involved, including the council, local councillors, residents groups, Network Rail and TFL.
We visited the area, watched how people used the underpass and observed their body language.
How could we make this space more inviting and nurture some local pride? We proposed taking people on a journey through history to enlighten, inspire and inform with a timeline of local history. An underpass of history, if you will.
We worked with local historians, the Imperial War Museum and council archives. Links Signs did a fantastic job producing and installing the panels. They cleaned the entire underpass, installed the lighting, and ensured that the panels could be inspected and that any ooze would be directed behind them.
